19th ANNUAL ACCORDION KINGS CONCERT

What: The Accordion Kings, a free outdoor concert now in its 19th year
Where: Miller Outdoor Theatre, Hermann Park, Houston
When: 7 p.m. June 7, 2008
Featuring: Step Rideau & the Zydeco Outlaws, La Tropa F and The Knights of Dixie Orchestra

This year’s Accordion Kings concert features Houston’s own Step Rideau & the Zydeco Outlaws, an internationally renowned zydeco act, plus tejano favorites La Tropa F and another beloved Houston band, the Knights of Dixie Orchestra. All share Gulf Coast accordion backgrounds: Rideau is a native Louisianan who merges influences from Creole to rhythm ‘n’ blues and urban rap; the multi-platinum-selling, Grammy-nominated family band La Tropa F was heard on the “Selena” film soundtrack and has played throughout the United States and Mexico; and the versatile Knights of Dixie, one of the state’s most popular dance bands, draw from a variety of American musical traditions including polka and big-band swing.

Also: One winner will be chosen, with help from the audience, for our second annual Big Squeeze accordion competition, a contest for young Texas and Louisiana players. Four finalists will face off for the grand prize: two players from our 18-and-under category and two from the 19-to-25 age group will be selected at our semi-finals on May 11 at Austin’s Mexican American Cultural Center, and given $250 each, plus an expenses-paid trip to Houston for the finals. The grand prize is $500 and a day of recording time at Houston’s historic SugarHill Recording Studios, plus another trip to Houston to use it, and professional support services. He or she might also appear in a documentary by famed director Hector Galán.

Accordion fans can make a weekend out of it; Friday, June 6, at 8 p.m. at the Miller Theatre, Several Dancers Core presents Polka Party, a celebration of the Czech, German and Polish heritages of South Texas.  The free performance will feature accompaniment by polka band the Texas Dutchmen.

Miller Outdoor Theatre is located at 100 Concert Drive in Hermann Park. Metro stop: Rice University Station. For more information: www.milleroutdoortheater.com, 713-284-8352 or www.texasfolklife.org, 512-441-9255.

Over 8,000 Band Students Compete in Corpus Christi

(Corpus Christi, TX - 2008) Two band festivals draw some 8,500 students from the five-state region ranging from elementary to high school in a span of four weeks, providing over $1.5 million in economic impact for Corpus Christi. The Buccaneer Classic

Music Festival (BCMF) hosts approximately 2,500 students from April 26 to May 3 at the Texas A&M Corpus Christi Performing Arts Center and the Southcoast Music Festival (SCMF) brings some 6,000 students to the Flour Bluff High School Auditorium from April 11 to May 3.

Both festivals give band students the opportunity to enjoy the hundred of miles of beaches in Corpus Christi and area attractions. Paul Davis, Founder and Producer of the SCMF said, "There wasn't an opportunity for smaller schools to have a chance to compete at a beachside destination unless they traveled to Florida". Area Coordinator for the BCMF, Penny Whitman agreed by stating that the music groups mostly enjoy the beaches, but also touring the Texas State Aquarium and USS Lexington each year.

The SCMF is in its 23rd year and is expected to draw some 125 school groups from around the state, averaging at 60 students in each group. The festival presents a total of fourteen 'Best in Class' awards during the course of the four weeks and no group leaves without some kind of award in their hands to take home. The SCMF comprises of middle school and high school concert bands and orchestras with university music directors as judges from all over the United States.

Davis reported that the festival has been consistent in attendance for the last 13 years because Corpus Christi is easily accessible by driving, inexpensive and "just plain fun for the kids".

Tracy Cavazos, Director of Marketing at Port Royal Ocean Resort said, "The visiting music groups find value in our property with a combination of the room layouts, lagoon sized pool, location on the beach and an onsite restaurant".

Fourteen years ago the Buccaneer Days Commission asked American Classic, Inc. to begin producing the BCMF. Now celebrating its 50th year, the BCMF ranges in elementary to high school music groups competing in countless divisions spanning from concert bands, choirs and orchestras. Whitman commented, "The students and directors leave the performing arts center saying 'wow, this is awesome'. It is one of the finest performing facilities in the state".

Music groups participating in the BCMF are often interested in performing at locations throughout the city for the experience and practice while in town. The music groups traveling to compete from the five-state region enjoy performing live in front of the public at not only the Buccaneer Days celebration; they also utilize Whataburger Field, Texas State Aquarium and other venues throughout the city. The BCMF draws groups ranging in 30 to 200 students and is the only music festival sanctioned as part of Buccaneer Days.
