For thousands of people in the Coastal Bend area, the YMCA is a place to call home. Yes, we offer state-of-the-art exercise equipment, a heated pool, youth sports and fun classes to help you improve your health…but we’re so much more. The YMCA is a place where families, children, teens and seniors find a warm welcome, a place to gather, to exercise, to play, to learn, and to find camaraderie. At the YMCA, you’re part of a caring community that supports your goals, reflects your values, and appreciates your contributions. And, as a not-for-profit organization, we strive to make membership affordable to everyone—regardless of your financial circumstances.
The YMCA first came to Corpus Christi in 1886. In 1941 we opened our doors at our current location 417 S. Upper Broadway. The 45,000 square foot building has been the cornerstone of our community for the last 67 years. The cost of the building was $100,000 and was funded entirely through contributions from individuals. This YMCA brought Corpus Christi its first gymnasium, indoor swimming pool and had residential headquarters to provide housing for young men when they came to the city.
One vision, 122 years old has four simple, yet enduring values: Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility. With these four values we help all people develop their FAITH. Our values have been the cornerstone of our community.
The YMCA is the largest and oldest service organization in America, an organization that today serves 17 million members in 120 countries- 4,900 served by the YMCA of the Coastal Bend.
The fact is the YMCA flourishes because those values are as relevant today as they were in 1844, when a young drapery clerk named George Williams sought to develop a wholesome place for young people to escape the immorality of the London Streets during the Industrial Revolution. Along with a few friends, he succeeded, and with that simple act germinated an idea that spread to America seven years later and took root in Corpus Christi in 1886.
Over the decades, the YMCA of the Coastal Bend has grown to provide the wholesome, life-enriching activities young George Williams envisioned. And YMCAs all across America became an integral part of our cultures fabric, sparking a spirit of creativity that has given us basketball and volleyball, both invented at the YMCA; night school which has enabled so many to further their education; and the concepts for healthy organizations including the Boy Scouts and Campfire Girls.
Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility will continue to develop the faith of our members and participants. They are more than words, they are values that guide us in all we do, values we share with members of every age, race, creed, and economic circumstance every day. Please come and join us at the YMCA.
