Taqueria Acapulco

What looks like a small, low-quality restaurant in Corpus Christi, really surprised me. Due to it’s great service, wonderful food, and low prices, Acapulco has become my favorite restaurant in town and one of the featured Mexican restaurants at the CorpusChristiDaily.com.

The restaurant is a small family-owned business with two locations in town. The first is at the shopping center at Airline and McArdle, and the second is just around the corner on Airline. They’re within walking distance of each other.

The shopping center location:

Seating at this restaurant is far better than the other restaurant. There are two large rooms, and no smoking sections. Seats are very available to large parties and for couples as well. I walked in on two occasions with parties of ten or more and was seated in minutes. I don’t think I’ve ever had to wait for a seat at this location.

The service at this location is also a little better, and you’re almost guaranteed to have an English speaking waitress during the day.

The Airline location:

This is a smaller, romantic restaurant meant for couples and intimate settings. The lighting is darker, there are more small booths and tables, and the decor has a less busy feel to it. This is probably one of the most perfect places to go on a first date.

The service here is a little different. You might get a waitress who speaks only Spanish, which can be difficult for those of us that don’t. However, pointing always works, and they can say some words in English. And, if you really can’t tolerate the misunderstandings, you can ask if someone can help you that speaks English, as there is always someone available.

General:

I love the food. Not only is it authentic Mexican cooking, with items such as Tostadas, REAL nachos, and Menudo on the menu, the servings are large for what you’re paying. My favorites on the menu are all on the last page. They have a variety of Tostadas, sandwiches, for $2.25. They’re filling, and if you need a little more, you can order a side of french fries for $.75. There are also Nachos, with a lot of topping and just a few chips for $3. The Burritos are $2.25 for regular burritos with lettuce, tomatoes, and sour cream on the inside along with whatever meat you like. Don’t let the word “regular” fool you either, the burritos are 3 inches round and around 8 inches long. I can never eat more than half... and even my friend who eats a lot couldn’t eat more than the entire burrito. You can also have your burrito Acapulco style meaning it’s smothered in cheese and meat sauce giving it a little more of a greasy taste. Tacos are &.99 a piece, and are sort of average.
Overall, I would have to say that this restaurant is appealing in many ways. As a college student, it appeals to my budget. As a romantic, the setting appeals to me for dating. And as a lover of Mexican food, the taste brings me back for more every time I need a little bit of Mexican.
