Former World Champion 'Ferocious' Fernando Vargas returns to the ring in Corpus Christi, Texas, AmericanBank Center.
Boxing fans crowded into the Omni Marina to view the weigh in of former World Boxing Champ Fernando Vargas, 27 (24-2, 22 KOs) and challenger Raymond Joval (33-3, 15 KOs). Both weighed in officially at 162. With in entourage dressed in black Vargas made his way into the room quietly while Joval stood silently glaring from the other side of the room. Only after he was called up did he move. Vargas himself disputed his official announced weight of 162 pounds and adjusted the scale himself and pronounced his official weight at 161 and a half. He raised his hands showing his sculpted torso and biceps, and posed for the cameras hording the lime light from an unknown challenger. Joval roared after making weight and both fighters faced off chin to chin before heading off.
9,0000 boxing fans are expected to make their way to AmericanBank Center Saturday night, located on Corpus Christi bay to view several bouts before going live on HBO boxing after dark. Corpus Christian's are used to viewing top ranked boxers. With former home town champs like Robert Elizondo, Jesse Benavides and Harold & Frankie 'Panchito" Warren, Corpus Christi used to be a mecca for upcoming fighters. Promoter Lester Bedford with strong ties to Corpus Christi has over the years brought quality match-ups to the now defunct coliseum. This larger venue now allows him to bring in the elite World Class Boxers. Few tickets remain for the expected sold out event.
