Unsung Hero Award






(Corpus Christi, TX., Oct. 25, 2004) – The Southside Corpus Christi Rotary Club will honor 3 employees of the City of Corpus Christi with the Unsung Hero Award on Wednesday, October 27, 2004 at 12:00 pm noon at the Kings Crossing Country Club.




The Unsung Hero Award is presented annually by the Southside Rotary Club to outstanding employees of the City who come to work everyday, work hard all day, rarely complain, and keep a positive outlook on their jobs. Nominees are those city employees in labor-intensive positions who perform the actual work in the departments of public utilities, solid waste, water, waste water, parks and recreation, streets, and other hands-on departments.



Roy Laughlin from the Parks and Recreation Department, Anthony E. Sanchez from the Storm Water Department, and Saul Yanez from the Gas Department will be recognized with plaques and proclamations by the Southside Rotary President David Walker. Their supervisors nominated them for the Unsung Hero Award, and City Manager Skip Noe selected these three winners from all of the nominations received.



Along with the plaques and proclamations, Mr. Laughlin, Mr. Yanez, and Mr. Sanchez will be hosted to lunch and are encouraged to bring their families as guests for lunch. Additionally Mayor Loyd Neal and City Council members have been invited to attend this luncheon honoring the 3 Unsung Heroes.



Mr. Laughlin has been described by his supervisors Elsa Munoz and Deborah Henry with Corpus Christi Parks and Recreation Department as “the epitome of a dedicated civil servant…He consistently demonstrates an excellent rapport with the general public, co-workers, and supervisors…He enthusiastically accepts special projects and ….never says ‘that is not my job’”.



Mr. Sanchez is described by his supervisor in the Storm Water Department Stephen Emerson as “dedicated, hardworking, cooperative, and reliable…He is a team-player who has an effective rapport with peers, supervisors, and more importantly customers, earning their respect and confidence…He consistently volunteers for additional duties and demonstrates the initiative to perform needed tasks on his own.”



Bill Payton from the Gas Department who supervises Mr. Yanez states that “Saul Yanez has always excelled in positions he has held at the Gas Department…The Gas Department is always confident that Saul will properly assess service calls and ensure the safety of our customers, the citizens of Corpus Christi. Saul is courteous to customers, yet firm when safety is an issue. Our customers respond well to Saul…”
