Fitness Summit Meeting

Mayor Loyd Neal will host a summit meeting next week to rally community support to improve health and fitness in Corpus Christi. The Mayor will meet with Kevin Saunders’, a former member of the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports, and local community leaders whose primary focus is health and fitness, to discuss implementing a grassroots community health and fitness initiative in Corpus Christi.

Mayor Neal will use the summit meeting to elevate his health and fitness agenda and enhance the visibility of programs offered through the City’s Park and Recreation Department, and to support current programs in our school districts, the YMCA and the YWCA. Mayor Neal and Kevin Saunders will present a special award to the Foy H. Moody High School Science and Health Center for the school’s excellence in health and fitness education.

The Corpus Christi Health and Fitness Summit meeting is helping kick-off the Kevin Saunders’ Health and Fitness Tour of America which will include visits to more than 125 cities across the country. The tour will assemble mayors and leaders in business, government, education, health and fitness to facilitate a dialogue concerning health and fitness in American communities.

Saunders is committed to confronting the epidemic of obesity that is plaguing America and sharing his message of motivation to audiences across the nation. A three-time Olympic wheelchair athlete, Saunders served on the President’s Council for Physical Fitness and Sports under Presidents George H. Bush and Bill Clinton. Saunders, a former resident of Corpus Christi, was injured in a grain elevator accident in 1981 which left him paralyzed. He knows well the strength, courage and discipline required to confront life’s challenges.
