Internationally-acclaimed Fine Arts High School Presenting Dance Performance as Part of Cultural Programs Series
Houstons High School of Performing and Visual Arts troupe to dazzle with dance steps in Richardson Auditorium Sept. 23
Students in the Department of Dance of the High School of Performing and Visual Arts (HSPVA) in Houston make up some of the most promising young talent preparing for professional careers in dance or entrance into leading university and conservatory dance programs across the nation. The schools reputation for producing dancers for Broadway and network television precedes itself.
As part of Del Mar Colleges Cultural Programs Series, over 30 students from HSPVA will dazzle audiences with their dance steps on Thursday, Sept. 23. The performance begins at 7 p.m. in Richardson Auditorium, located on the East Campus at Ayers and Baldwin. Admission is free to all Del Mar College employees and students with a valid I.D. and $5 for the general public.
As part of their visit to the College, the group will also present a masterclass in dance Friday, Sept. 24, from 10 a.m. until noon in the East Campus Gymnasium, located on Baldwin Blvd. For more information about the Sept. 23 performance or Sept. 24 master class, call 698-1338.
HSPVAs Department of Dance consists of approximately 100 dance majors and a dance faculty of twelve prominent professional artists. Course offerings include ballet, modern dance, jazz, musical theatre, dance composition, tap dance, choreography, dance repertory, dance production and dance photography with the curriculum enhanced with frequent master classes and lecture-based demonstrations in all dance forms.
Under the direction of LuAnne Carter and Janie Carothers, the schools Concert Dancers have appeared on numerous university and college campuses and toured across the United States, England, Scotland and China. The HSPVA Concert Dancers are the only high school arts program in Texas on the Young Audiences of Houston roster. Over 135 elementary and middle schools in the Houston area have featured their one-hour Young Audiences show in the last nine years.
The best yardstick for measuring the success of the HSPVA Department of Dance is the achievements of its graduates. Many have been featured on Broadway and network television, appeared with outstanding international dance companies and received generous scholarships to leading university dance programs. HSPVA has had seven Arts Recognition and Talent Search Presidential Scholars in Dance, 33 finalists in the 25-year history of that national program and two Presidential Distinguished Teachers.
